Edwin Cerio's mother was English, the father Ignazio Cerio was a doctor and naturalist. Edwin Cerio had two doctorates (shipbuilding and mechanical engineering) and was a project engineer for the construction of warships at the Krupp Germania shipyard in Kiel from 1902 to 1915 . Since Cerio spoke six languages, Krupp also used him for the sale of warships to the navy of foreign countries, especially in South America.

The First World War brought Cerio into a crisis of conscience, he no longer wanted to be involved in the hatred of the peoples as a “trader of warships”. He retired to Capri, as an architect he built some of the most beautiful houses on the island in the style known as "Capristil", based on the Moorish tradition, but above all he found his new calling as a writer.

In 1920 he was elected mayor. He used this time to defend himself against the sprawl of the Capri countryside; Even then, many hotels, apartment complexes and the like were built. This mission was controversial and after three years it was voted out. Cerio also owned several villas himself.

Cerio's best-known book Aria di Capri (1927) was also published in the USA and England, abbreviated in Germany under the title Capri, a small world theater . In addition to novels and short stories, he wrote over fifty monographs of scientific content on fauna, flora, geology and paleontology on Capri. He was married to the writer Claretta Cerio .
