Edwin Stefanow Sugarew (also written Edvin Stefanov Sugarev , Bulgarian Едвин Стефанов Сугарев ; born December 27, 1953 in Sofia ) is a Bulgarian writer , literary critic , dissident against the communist regime , blogger and politician.

Life

Edwin Sugarew was born on December 27, 1953 in the Bulgarian capital Sofia. In 1978 he completed his studies in philology at the Kliment Ohridski University in Sofia. Between 1981 and 1984 Edwin Sugarew was a research assistant in the Department of History of Modern Bulgarian Literature at the Literature Institute of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAN for short). In 1985 he defended his PhD in philology at the University of Plovdiv with the work “Bulgarian literature after the First World War and German expressionism (world views and stylistic parallels)” (from the Bulgarian Българската литература след Първата след Първата мирикед Първета сиред Първета сиред Първета сиред Първета виред Първета стилистични паралели) ). Between 1986 and 1990 Sugarew worked as a research assistant at the Literature Institute of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

In 1989 Sugarew became a member of the Ekoglastnost movement, which was opposition to the communist regime and was still illegal at the time . In 1990 he became a member of the editorial board of the literary magazine Literaturna misal (Bulgarian Литературна мисъл). 1990 was Sugarew deputy in the 7th Grand National Assembly , which set the course for the democratization of Bulgaria after the fall of the Iron Curtain set and the valid today Basic Law adopted in the country.

In the period 1991-1996 Sugarew was editor-in-chief of the newspaper Literaturen westnik (Bulgarian Литературен вестник, to German: literary newspaper ) and a member of parliament . Edwin Sugarew was Bulgarian ambassador to Mongolia between 1997 and 1998 and Bulgarian ambassador to India between 1998 and 2003 . Since 2002 Sugarew has been working again as a research assistant at the BAN Literature Institute, and since 2003 again as editor-in-chief of the literary newspaper.

In 2013, Sugarew and four of his children went on hunger strike to protest the incumbent government. Sugarew was admitted to the intensive care unit as a result. He then broke off the strike.
