Efraín Goldenberg Schreiber (born December 29, 1929 in Lima ) is a Peruvian politician who was Prime Minister of Peru from February 17, 1994 to July 28, 1995 .

Life

Goldenberg Schreiber grew up as the son of Jewish parents in Talara and, after attending the Colegio Anglo-Peruano in 1946, began studying humanities and law at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM), which he graduated in 1952. Then he worked as an entrepreneur.

On August 27, 1993 he succeeded Óscar de la Puente Raygada as Foreign Minister (Ministro de Relaciones Exteriores) in the cabinet of Prime Minister Alfonso Bustamante y Bustamante and held this office until July 27, 1995. At the same time, Goldenberg became a clerk on February 17, 1994 appointed by President Alberto Fujimori himself Prime Minister of Peru (Presidente del Consejo de Ministros) and thus the successor to Bustamante y Bustamante. On October 15, 1999, he replaced Víctor Joy Way as Minister of Economics and Finance (Ministro de Economía y Finanzas) and held this office in the cabinet of Prime Minister Alberto Bustamante Belaunde until the end of his term on July 29, 2000, after which he was replaced by Carlos Boloña Behr .

After the resignation of President Fujimori on November 21, 2000, an investigation was initiated against Goldenberg Schreiber and other members of the government for unauthorized enrichment, embezzlement and conspiracy. He evaded prosecution by fleeing to the USA . Ultimately, however, the preliminary investigation was discontinued by the Supreme Court (Corte Suprema de Justicia de la República del Perú) .
