Efrem von Nea Makri (born September 14, 1384 in Attica , Greece ( Greek Άγιος Εφραίμ Νέας Μάκρης ); † May 5, 1426 ) was a martyr and miracle worker ; he is not to be confused with Ephrem the Syrian .

history

Efrem was born on September 14, 1384. As a half-orphan, he was raised early on by his mother and six other brothers. At the age of 14 he went to the monastery of the Annunciation on the monastery hill near Nea Makri and lived an ascetic life there for about 27 years . He became a priest monk . On September 14, 1425, on the feast of the Exaltation of the Cross, his martyrdom began with his capture by the Ottomans . It ended on May 5th, 1426, a Tuesday at 9 a.m. At that time he was 42 years old. He died tied headfirst to an olive tree that still exists today and nailed to his head and feet with nails. Finally, his body, which was covered with wounds, was pierced at the navel with a burning log.

Apparitions

After about 500 years he is said to have appeared to numerous people and to this day has performed numerous miracles . His relics were found on January 3rd, 1950, they exude a divine fragrance and are a source of miraculous healings.

His name day is celebrated in the Eastern Church on January 3rd , the day his holy relics were found, and for the second time on May 5th, the day of his death.
