Moor lakes , sources of the Tiefsteinbach |
The Egelseen are three closely connected small lakes in the Salzburg Flachgau region . They are located in the municipality of Mattsee , about 20 km north of the city of Salzburg in the Salzburg Lake District ; its eastern bank forms the border with the community of Schleedorf .
The Egelseen are exactly called Großegelsee , Mitteregelsee and Unteregelsee from north to south , a nameless small body of water can be found north of it. Their surroundings consist for the most part of moor areas , which form the headwaters of the Tiefsteinbach . All around them are the hamlets of Paltingmoos, Edt, Mölkham, Leitgermoss and Schalkham, which belong to the communities Mattsee and Schleedorf. The Tiefsteinbach drains the Egelseen - after the Tiefsteinklamm between Eßling and Helming (Schleedorf municipality) - via Eisbach / Altbach bei Weng ( Köstendorf municipality ) to Wallersee . They are separated from the closer Mattsee by a watershed.
Originally there was only one Egelsee, but due to the need for usable agricultural land , the neighbors decided at the beginning of the 20th century to drain the lake, so that these three small bodies of water were left over.
