Egilmar

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Egilmar († May 11, 907 ) was Bishop of Osnabrück from 885 to 907.

Egilmar appears under Arnulf's government as a participant in several church assemblies, namely at Mainz 888, Frankfurt 892, Tribur 895. He put the minster in Osnabrück in a better position. His name is best known through a complaint about the tithe he deserves to his church around 890 to Pope Stephan VI. judged. A large part of this income was transferred to the two monasteries Corvey and Herford , which are closely connected to his family, at the time of Emperor Ludwig the Pious by Count Cobbo , Vogt of the bishopric of Osnabrück, and confirmed by King Arnulf and the Mainz Synod. This considerable loss of income had seriously damaged the Diocese of Osnabrück, and Egilmar was not prepared to accept the decision of the king, the synod and that of a court of nine bishops in this matter. Since he saw himself limited to the fourth part of the income originally due to his pen, he sought to have his rights restored by the Pope. This seems to have declared itself in Egilmar's favor, but this did not show any particular effect. Rather, Corvey and Herford were left fully enjoying the disputed tithe, with the obligation to provide for the maintenance of the archpriest and pastor in the respective districts. In response to his complaints, Egilmar received no other satisfaction than that, in addition to immunity, he was granted the right not to have to take part in any military expeditions unless the Danes attacked his diocese. It was only Heinrich IV in 1079 that returned the disputed tithe to the Osnabrück church under Benno .
