The Eglésia del Calvari is a chapel in the municipality of Pollença on the Spanish Mediterranean island of Mallorca .

location

It is located on the Kalvarienberg northwest of the center of Pollença. From the center of the village, the Carrer del Calvari staircase leads up to the chapel. Another path leads along 14 stone crosses, each 2.90 meters high, which represent the stations of an old way of the cross.

Architecture and history

After the Christian reconquest of the island in 1229, the area was given to the Order of the Temple by King Jaume I , but from 1314 it belonged to the Order of Malta . In 1488 the notary Joan Porquer brought the sculptural group of Our Lady under the Cross to Pollença. The only Gothic statue in Mallorca was erected on the Calvary. A first chapel was probably built at this point around 1650 and served to protect the figures, which at that time were only housed in a shed. In 1650 the first Good Friday procession down from the chapel took place, which is still taking place regularly today.

The current baroque building was inaugurated in 1799 and is based on church buildings of the Counter Reformation . The facade of the chapel is designed harmoniously and shows classicist influences. The building is covered by a gable roof . The entrance portal is on the south-east side facing the city. A bell gable sits enthroned above the portal .

The interior is elliptical and has three naves. The room is spanned by a barrel vault with belt arches. The cornice is made of sandstone .

In 1952 the interior of the chapel was redesigned by the architect Josep Feragut and the entrepreneur Marti Orell. The original baroque altar was removed and replaced by an apse in Romanesque style. The sculpture was placed on a column using an old millstone . Candlesticks, the large ceiling lamp and the other lamps were created by the artisan Tomeu Alzamora .

On the front of the stone altar there is a flat relief made of olive wood. It was created by the sculptor Mestre Paco and represents 14 stations of the Passion of Christ. In the past there was a processional figure of the different Christ on the altar . The altar and figure are by the artist Arcas. The costs were covered by two brothers from the Can Pontico family, the clergyman Pere Josep and the mayor Felip Cerdà.
