Eglinton (Toronto Subway)

Eglinton is an underground subway station in Toronto . It lies on the Yonge-University line of the Toronto Subway , at the intersection of Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue . The station, which is located opposite the Minto Midtown residential complex , has a central platform and is used by an average of 72,750 passengers every day (2015).

There are transfer options to ten bus routes, which ensures an above-average frequency of use. The station building also has several shops. Nearby are the TVOntario studios , Canada Square Complex and Eglinton Park. The station opened on March 30, 1954 along with the Union - Eglinton section, the oldest subway on Canadian soil. For nearly two decades Eglinton was the northern terminus, until the opening of the section of York Mills on March 31, 1973. Until the early 1980s spent here every other train, since the urban development was further north not far advanced.

In the medium term, the Eglinton station will have a second level. A light rail line , the Eglinton Line , has been under construction along Eglinton Avenue since November 2011 . It will initially be 19 km long and lead to Kennedy station in the Scarborough district . In the central section with the Eglinton and Eglinton West subway stations, an underground route is planned over a length of 10 km. In order to make space for the expanded subway station, the bus station , which was built in 1954 and has not been in use since 2004 for safety reasons, was demolished in autumn 2016. The Eglinton line is scheduled to go into operation in 2021.
