Egon David (born June 3, 1939 ) is a former German soccer player who was active for BSG Stahl Eisenhüttenstadt in the GDR Oberliga , the top division of GDR soccer, in 1969/70 .

Athletic career

Coming from the offspring of the company sports association (BSG) Stahl Stalinstadt, Egon David rose in 1959 with the first team from the 2nd GDR league in the second-class GDR league . In the GDR league, David was initially a striker until 1964 for BSG Stahl, which had already adopted the changed city name of Eisenhüttenstadt at the end of 1961. Of the 95 league games played in the 1961/62 to 1963/64 seasons, David played 87 matches and scored goals each time, a total of 15. After he had only played eleven of the 30 league games in 1964/65 and scored only one goal, he then returned back as a regular player and was missing in another four seasons with a total of 120 games in only 25 games. Again he was always a goal scorer and scored 29 goals.

1968/69 he contributed with 23 league appearances and six goals to the rise of Eisenhüttenstadt in the league. In the league season 1969/70 David was initially used in the first three games, but remained without a goal. After that, coach Manfred Fuchs only used him sporadically in five other league games, in which David also remained goalless. Instead, he had to play most of the time with the 2nd team in the GDR league, where he scored five goals in 15 missions. At the end of the season, the top division team from Stahl Eisenhüttenstadt was determined to be relegated. Instead of the GDR league, the previous league team then had to compete in the third-class district league Frankfurt (Oder) , as the BSG were accused of serious violations of the association's statutes.

BSG Stahl became district champion with David in 1971 and qualified for the GDR league again. This now played with five seasons, each with 22 games to be completed. Although already 32 years old, David was back in the squad, but was only used in ten GDR league games in the 1971/72 season. Eisenhüttenstadt qualified for the league promotion round, in which David played two of the eight promotion games. As third out of five applicants, Stahl missed promotion, and after the season David was eliminated from the first team. He then played with the 2nd team in the district league. Within nine seasons Egon David had played eight league games (without a goal) and 221 GDR league games (50 goals).
