Ehmedê Xanî ( احمد خانی Aḥmad-e Ḫānī ; * 1651 ; † 1707 ) was a Kurdish writer , scholar and poet . Some authors consider him the founder of Kurdish nationalism.

Xanî was born in what is now the Turkish province of Hakkâri and belonged to the Eşiret of the Xanî. He traveled to the different regions of Kurdistan and lived for a long time in the Kurdish principality of Botan . Xanî spoke Kurdish , Persian and Arabic . In 1683 he wrote a children's dictionary in rhyme form with the title Nûbihar , the first Kurdish primer for children. It includes 950 Arabic terms and their meaning in the Kurdish language.

His most famous work is the story Mem û Zîn , a love story from 1692. The story consists of 2,655 verses. It also contains a description of Kurdish society in the 17th century.

Ehmedê Xanî died in 1707 and was buried in a Türbe near the Ishak Pasha Palace near Doğubeyazıt.
