He published numerous poems in German and Alsatian dialect; was a defender of Alsatian tradition, his heart was French, his muse was German, as he put it in the following verse:

“My lyre is German, it sounds like German chants ,
Loving the Gallic rooster, my sword is true to French,
May it sound over the Rhine and the Wasgau:
Alsace is my country! Alsace, my heart beats for you! "

In this spirit he wrote the chanson: " And Alsace, our country, it's mineidli schoen" and the verse

The Rhine Valley is my fatherland
The Alsace is inside its diamond.
