Oak ram

The Oak Aries Bock , wasps Bock or oak trim Bock ( Plagionotus arcuatus ) is a beetle of the family of longhorn beetles (Cerambycidae).

description

The beetles are 8 to 20 millimeters long. They are very similar to the common ram , but more powerfully built. The body is black and has narrow yellow bandages that can also be found on the head. Their bodies look very similar to wasps . This camouflage ( mimicry ) protects them from enemies. The antennae and legs are light brown throughout.

The appearance of the oak ram is variable; so the band of the drawing can be broken up into individual spots. The second and third band can unite in whole or in part in the longitudinal direction. The small spots on the seam behind the pronotum are, however, resistant.

Occurrence

The species is mainly found in oak stands from deep to low mountain ranges. The oak ram can be found in Central and Southern Europe. In the north the distribution area extends into central Norway and Sweden as well as in the south of Finland . The species is rarely found in England .

Way of life

The eggs are preferably laid in the bark of oak trunks, diseased trees or stumps. The female is mated by the male as soon as she is laid. The larvae gnaw long, wide, winding tunnels in the branches, which are then filled up with drill dust. Pupation takes place at a depth of about three to seven centimeters in the wood, and the larval development takes about two years. The larvae are also rarely found in beeches , linden or poplars . In contrast to similar species, the beetles do not visit flowers, but stay on their nesting wood trunks, they can be found from May to June.
