Egg nipple
Egg nipples are short nipple tubes (they are screwed into the cable outlet of lamp sockets) with an insulating porcelain coating on the upper half that holds a small wire bracket.
The purpose of the egg nipple, which is rarely used today, is to hang a lamp on a hook or a chain , thereby relieving the mechanical load on the supply line . The isolation of the wire clip from the nipple tube prevents a defective socket from putting hooks or chains under tension .
The same function, but without insulation, is performed by ring nipples , in which the bracket is attached directly to the nipple, and suspension brackets that are screwed onto a simple nipple tube.
The origin of the term egg nipple is unclear, but the shape of the porcelain coating is somewhat reminiscent of a decapitated egg .
