Nipple (tube)
A nipple is a short pipe connector with the pipe dimension. It thus represents the counterpart to a socket . Depending on the connection technology and material, a nipple can be smooth or with an external thread .
Very short nipples with two identical ends are also known as double nipples. With a thread cutting stock , the production of nipples is possible with some effort, even with steel pipes to be screwed.
The combination of a nipple on one side with a sleeve on the other side is also called nipple sleeve , socket nipple , paragraph nipple or male adapter , respectively. Nipples that have a change in nominal size are called reducing nipples .
The area of application ranges from applications in aerospace , shipbuilding , plant construction as well as industrial and commercial systems to domestic installation technology . In installation technology, nipples are usually not provided with metric threads , but with Whitworth pipe threads . Gases , liquids and granulated solids are transported as media .
Depending on their application, they are offered for various nominal widths and nominal pressures .
