The egg cookie is a small oval square in Cologne's Neustadt district in the Veedel Südstadt adjacent to the Römerpark . However, it does not officially bear this place name.

location

According to the urban planning of Cologne Neustadt by Josef Stübben after 1887, six residential streets meet at the Eierplätze : Teutoburger Strasse, Mainzer Strasse coming from Ubierring and beyond the roundabout to Alteburger Strasse; Trajan and Titus streets frame the triangular Roman park ; Finally, the Eburonenstraße reminds of the adversaries of the Romans Trajan and Titus, who were immortalized on the other side of the square . Beyond the Teutoburg, a path leads as a visual axis to the building of the Cologne College of Commerce , built in 1907/8 , the main building of today's Cologne University of Applied Sciences . The layout is also oval because the roads that meet are not built equally wide.

layout

The traffic is led around the oval as a one-way street (Mainzer Straße) in a ring. The inner area is overgrown with lawn and 12 linden trees and is quartered in the middle by two footpaths in east-west and north-south directions, the intersection of which is in the middle of the square. in The Cologne artist Rolf Tepel tried to counteract the misuse of the cookie as a parking space by setting stones. The facility acts as the end of the avenue on Teutoburger Straße and leads to the adjoining Römerpark.

Surname

Since there are no residential buildings surrounding the roundabout, the Cologne city council saw no reason to name it. Not so the people from Cologne, who named it egg cookies . The fact that the name is also a synonym for a popular baked product is in keeping with the Cologne custom of giving special names to specialties such as Kölsch caviar or Halven Hahn .

use

The square is located in Cologne's Südstadt, a culturally and student-influenced district. It is therefore not surprising that the square is used as a starting point or destination for events. In the corner houses near the square, as already planned in the planning of the Neustadt, restaurants and cafes are located, which also use the sidewalks in summer, especially at the end of Teutoburger Strasse. The Cologne scene likes to frequent the Café am Römerpark on the corner of Teutoburger Straße . A kiosk at the egg cookie (orange-red building) also satisfies the more ambulatory demand. The center of the roundabout may not yet be used for gastronomic purposes. Occasionally an informal band plays there: The Egg Cookies Band .
