8 Bold Souls is an American jazz - octet of modern creative and avant-garde jazz .
Octet 8 Bold Souls was founded by saxophonist Edward Wilkerson , a former member of the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble , in the 1980s with other musicians from the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). In the arrangements of the compositions played, the lower registers of the wind section are particularly preferred; The main soloist is the tuba player Aaron Dodd and, since 1997, Gerald Powell. In playing the octet, heavily orchestrated and structured parts alternate with very freely improvised passages. The style of 8 Bold Souls is very reminiscent of the bands of Henry Threadgill . The cellist Naomi Millender died in October 2018.
