Eiko Kadono

Eiko Kadono ( Japanese 角 野 栄 子 , Kadono Eiko ; born January 1, 1935 in Tokyo , Japan ) is a Japanese children's book author who was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Prize in 2018 .

Life

Kadono studied English at Waseda University . After completing her studies in 1960, she went to Brazil for two years and published her first children's books about this stay. In 1985 she started working on the novel Kiki's delivery service . The novel is about a 13-year-old witch who has to spend a year in a city in order to experience first experiences and adventures. Thanks to the film adaptation of the same name by Hayao Miyazaki in 1989, Kiki's small delivery service became a worldwide success. Due to the success, Kadono wrote another five books about Kiki. In Japan, Kiki enjoys a similarly popular status as Bibi Blocksberg in Germany . In 2014 the real filming of Kiki's small delivery service took place .

Other successful books by Kadonos are Nazonazo Asobi Uta ( な ぞ な ぞ あ そ び う た ), Zubon Senchō-san no Hanashi ( ズ ボ ン 船長 さ ん の 話 ) and Watashi no Mama wa Shizuka-san ( わ た し の マ マ は し ず ず ). Her works have been translated into English, French, Korean, Italian and Chinese, among others.
