Gu became American halfpipe and slopestyle champion in 2017 and 2018. In the 2017/18 season she won the half pipe at the US Revolution Tour in Park City and took third place in the half pipe at the Aspen Snowmass Freeskiing Open. At the 2018 Junior World Championships in Cardrona , she came fifth in the halfpipe and in slopestyle. She made her debut in the World Cup in November 2018 in Stubai , which she finished in eleventh place in slopestyle. At the following World Cups she took second place in the Slopestyle in Font Romeu and won her first World Cup victory in the Slopestyle on the Alpe di Siusi .
On June 6, 2019, she announced on Instagram that she wanted to start immediately for China. Since China does not have dual citizenship , the daughter of a Chinese mother and an American father took on Chinese citizenship.
At the Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lausanne in January 2020, Gu won three medals: gold in Big Air and in the halfpipe, and silver in slopestyle.
