The Einhorn pharmacy in Darmstadt is one of the oldest pharmacies in Germany. The first records in the records date from the second half of the 16th century (1570). A court pharmacy, which was specifically in the interests of the landgrave housekeeping, was only a little older, making the Einhorn pharmacy the oldest public pharmacy in Darmstadt.

timeline

In 1570, Landgrave Georg I of Hessen-Darmstadt (1547 to 1596) allowed his court pharmacist Kohl to open a pharmacy for the citizens of Darmstadt. Darmstadt had about 1200 inhabitants at that time. In the first few years, the pharmacy was operated in a house next to the town hall. Later, also during the Thirty Years' War , the pharmacy was located in the town hall . In 1676 the pharmacy was relocated to Kirchstrasse, opposite the town church. The name “Einhorn-Apotheke” dates back to the 18th century, as a difference to the city's second pharmacy. In 1901 Paul Ramdohr acquired the venerable unicorn pharmacy at the city church . From 1926 he ran the pharmacy together with his son-in-law Otto Wickop.

During the Second World War , the pharmacy, like the entire old town of Darmstadt , was destroyed in air raids . Otto Wickop had far-sighted stocks and furnishings in the Odenwald and Bensheim . Until it was possible to rebuild, the pharmacy was relocated to Bensheim ad Bergstrasse. The unicorn pharmacy was rebuilt in 1953 by Otto Wickop and his son Achim Wickop after an exchange of land on Ludwigsplatz, at the Bismarck fountain .

In 1970 Otto Wickop and Achim Wickop were awarded the Silver Merit Plaque of the City of Darmstadt on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the pharmacy .

Current situation

The Einhorn pharmacy has been centrally located on Ludwigsplatz in today's pedestrian zone in downtown Darmstadt since 1953.

Today Günter Wickop runs the unicorn pharmacy. The oldest pharmacy in Darmstadt has been in the fourth generation for over 100 years.
