Task Force Egypt

Walther Rauff

The Einsatzgruppe Egypt was a special unit of the SS . According to the historians Klaus-Michael Mallmann and Martin Cüppers , the aim was to carry out the mass murder of Jews in the British Mandate Palestine , analogous to the action of the Einsatzgruppen as in Eastern Europe . The Egyptian Task Force was on standby in Athens in the summer of 1942 . From here she was to be relocated to Palestine for use in order to join the Africa Corps (DAK) under the leadership of General Erwin Rommel . The task force in the Middle East should be led by SS-Obersturmbannführer Walther Rauff . The National Socialist plans to exterminate the oriental Jews, especially in Palestine, could not be implemented, however, because the advance into Egypt and Palestine was a long way off after the Axis' defeat in the second battle of El Alamein . According to the Israeli historian Haim Saadon, there was no explicit plan of extermination: Rauff's documents show that he was primarily concerned with helping the Wehrmacht to victory, and in doing so he developed the idea of setting up forced labor camps .
