The hermit's nest ( Actenoides monachus ) is a South Asian bird in the kingfishers family.

features

The hermit lair, which is up to 31 cm long, has a red beak and a black or blue head. Back, wings and tail are dark green, neck and underside reddish-brown. The male has blue cheeks, the female chestnut brown. The young bird also has maroon cheeks and a yellowish beak.

Occurrence

The hermit read is an endemic species and only occurs in Sulawesi . There he inhabits the rainforests of the lowlands from sea level to 900 m.

Subspecies

There are two subspecies:

  • Actenoides m. monachus lives in the north of Sulawesi as well as some neighboring islands and has a dark blue head, a darker reddish-brown chest and a lighter belly.
  • Actenoides m. capucinus lives in the south and east of the island. The head is black, the chest and belly have the same reddish-brown hue.

Behavior and reproduction

The Einsiedlerliest is a quiet, solitary bird that little is known about. It likely breeds in a hole in the ground or in a tree hole dug in a nest by tree termites in March or April. The diet consists of centipedes and beetles .
