Population development
In the early modern period , only a few hundred people lived in Herne. The population grew very slowly and kept falling due to the numerous wars, epidemics and famine. Only with the beginning of industrialization in the 19th century did population growth accelerate. In 1843 only 938 people lived in the village, in 1895 there were already 19,000. On April 1, 1897, the place received city rights . On July 1, 1906, Herne left the Bochum district and became an independent city . In 1910 the city had 57,000 inhabitants.
With the incorporation of part of the municipality of Bladenhorst and the Sodingen (municipalities of Sodingen, Börnig and Holthausen) on April 1, 1928 and of Oestrich and Kray on August 1, 1929, the urban area of Herne initially reached its greatest extent. As a result, the population increased by 25,000 to over 98,000. On March 14, 1933, the population exceeded the city's limit of 100,000, making it the first time for a short time city was. But just two months later, during the census on June 16, 1933, this limit was fallen below again.
The May 17, 1939 census showed a population of 94,649. On April 9, 1945, all residents were evacuated by the Wehrmacht , the police and the NSDAP . One day later, US troops occupied Herne without a fight. During the Second World War , the city was the target of 64 Allied air raids, in which 419 residents were killed. At the end of December 1945, 88,858 people were living in Herne again.
Due to the influx of refugees and displaced persons from the German eastern regions, the number of inhabitants again exceeded the limit of 100,000 in 1946 and rose to over 116,000 by 1953. On January 1, 1975 the population of Herne reached its historical high of 193,831 due to the union with the city (since 1955) Wanne-Eickel (92,472 inhabitants 1974). In relation to today's urban area, the population was even 220,404 in the 1961 census. On December 31, 2006, the " official population " for Herne was 169,991 (only main residences and after comparison with the other state offices) according to the state office for data processing and statistics in North Rhine-Westphalia ).
The following overview shows the number of inhabitants according to the respective territorial status. Up to 1818 these are mostly estimates, then census results (¹) or official updates by the city administration (until 1970) and the State Statistical Office (from 1971). From 1843 the information relates to the “customs clearance population”, from 1871 to the “local population”, from 1925 to the resident population and since 1987 to the “population at the place of the main residence”. Before 1843, the number of inhabitants was determined according to inconsistent survey methods.
