The iceberg is a 330 meter high elevation in the eastern Lusatian mountains in the Free State of Saxony . It is located west of Großhennersdorf , directly on federal highway 178 . In the immediate vicinity is the Lange Berg , which is 400 meters in a south-easterly direction.
The top of the iceberg was formed when nepheline basanite lava blocked and solidified over an eruption vent during volcanic activity in this area . The deeper layers consist of Seidenberger granodiorite .
In earlier times, two quarries were opened on this mountain, which mainly supplied building material for the nearby towns. Today, however, like the entire top of the iceberg, they are overgrown by a pedunculate oak forest and thorn bushes.
