Iron (III) iodide is an inorganic chemical compound of iron from the group of iodides . Solid iron (III) iodide is unstable. It does not arise when iron (II) iodide is tempered with iodine . Gaseous iron (III) iodide can be obtained when a loaded with iodine nitrogen gas at 499-559 ° C on solid iron (II) iodide is passed. In addition to iron (II) iodide and gaseous iodine, the equilibrium gas phase contains significant amounts of iron (III) iodide FeI 3 and Fe 2 I 6 .

In solid form it can be obtained in the form of an impure, decomposable black mass through the reaction of iron pentacarbonyl and iodine by irradiation at −20 ° C.
