Benaleka railway accident

In the railway accident Benaleka on 1 August 2007 ran away at Benaleka in the Democratic Republic of Congo after a brake failure, the car of a freight train on which many stowaways were riding. More than 100 dead and 220 injured, 128 of them seriously, were the result.

The train was on the Lubumbashi – Ilebo railway line operated by the Société Nationale des Chemins de fer du Congo from Ilebo to Kananga when the brakes hit the brakes around 11 p.m. in a remote area near Benaleka, about 220 km northwest of Kananga in the West Kasai province failed and the train drove unrestrained down a slope. Here derailed all eight (according to other sources: 10) freight cars of the train overturned and buried seven travelers among themselves.

The injured had to walk 12 km to the nearest hospital or were transported there by bicycles or carried by others. Medical personnel from the Mission de l'Organisation des Nations Unies en République Démocratique du Congo (MONUC) were also deployed later . The locomotive stayed on the track so that the engine driver was able to continue driving and get help. According to another source, he fled to avoid revenge from those affected.
