The train no. 886 of the Spanish state railway company RENFE was en route from Madrid to Barcelona . Between the train stations of Grisén and Pinseque , province of Saragossa , a fire broke out - for an unexplained cause - around 6:15 a.m. in a compartment of a heavily occupied third- class passenger car with a wooden body . Possible causes were later suspected: A burning cigarette that got caught between the seats and a wooden wall of the car or a short circuit in the car's electrical system . The state railway company wanted to see the causes in a coincidence and the panicked reaction of the travelers .

The dispatcher at the Grisén station noticed smoke and sparks on one of the last cars as the train was passing , but could not stop it. Due to the strong wind and the headwind - the train was traveling at around 60 km / h - the fire was greatly fanned, spread extremely quickly and also spread to the two following 3rd class cars of the same design. The emergency brake was only pulled 1.5 km after the Grisén train station (about 40 km before Saragossa ) and the train came to a stop. It was possible to separate the rear, burning part of the train from the front part of the train, so that the sleeping car , which ran in front of the 3rd class car, was only slightly damaged. The three cars that caught fire burned down completely.

Those injured in the accident were taken to Alagón and from there to hospitals in Zaragoza. The front part of the train drove with the uninjured travelers to Saragossa in the afternoon and then to its destination station, Barcelona-França .

consequences

30 people died, 33 were also injured. 27 people died of smoke inhalation and burns , four were killed when they jumped off the burning train that was still moving.
