Ibadan Railway Accident (1957)

In the Ibadan railway accident on September 29, 1957, a train derailed 30 km north of Ibadan , Nigeria . 66 people died.

Starting position

The railway line ran on a railway embankment at the later site of the accident . There was a passage through the dam so that the water could flow away. It was raining heavily. A passenger train from Lagos to Kano was en route. He drove 16 cars .

the accident

Due to the heavy rain, the draining water also carried flotsam with it, which blocked the flow. The water backed up on the embankment and began to soften, making the track position unstable. As the train passed the spot, the track slipped and seven of the train's cars derailed. Later, the weight of the water dammed up on the railway embankment even caused it to break.

consequences

66 people died, 122 were also injured.
