accident

Due to a signal error , a train going out of town and a train going into town of the Estrada de Ferro Central do Brasil drove towards each other on the same track . The collision took place under a motorway bridge , where the two trains pushed into each other, wedged and the wrecks of the passenger cars piled on top of each other.

consequences

In addition to the 128 dead, there were 300 injured. This was the fourth rail accident in Brazil with more than 50 deaths in seven years. The previous ones were the railway accidents of Nova Iguaçu (1951) , Piquet Carneiro (1951) and Anchieta (1952) .

The day after the accident, angry relatives of the passengers stormed and destroyed the stations of Mangueira and Engenho de Dentro . Attempts to devastate three other nearby train stations were repulsed by the police . The President of Brazil , Juscelino Kubitschek , dismissed three senior officials from the Estrada de Ferro Central do Brasil after the accident investigation revealed negligence in rail operations .

Remarks

  1. With slightly different information, see Peter WB Semmens: Catastrophes on rails. A worldwide documentation. Transpress, Stuttgart 1996, ISBN 3-344-71030-3 , p. 160, describes an accident in Pacienca, Brazil , which occurred on March 7, 1958 with 58 deaths and around 120 other injuries in a suburb of Rio de Janeiro should have. Apart from the fact that the place name of a suburb of Rio is to be written “Paciência”, the same accident seems to be meant. Semmens also mentions an accident on May 8, 1958 with 112 dead and 315 injured, which is said to have occurred in Rio de Janeiro. It led to the resignation of the management of the railway company. The same accident seems to be meant here too.
