Nova Iguaçu railway accident

The railway accident in Nova Iguaçu , a suburb of Rio de Janeiro , Brazil , was the collision of a railroad train with a tanker truck loaded with gasoline in the early morning of June 7, 1951.

Starting position

A tanker truck loaded with 20 cubic meters of petrol stopped in the early hours of the morning on a level crossing on a railway line on the Estrada de Ferro Central do Brasil in Nova Iguaçu .

At about 4:25 a.m., a five-part electric multiple unit approached , which was packed with commuters .

the accident

The train hit the broken tanker truck, which exploded from the impact and immediately set the train on fire. The heat wave was so intense that some of the travelers were instantly dead, they were found burned in their seats. Others tried to escape without succeeding, and the dead piled up at the exit doors.

54 people died and 44 were injured.
