Mezőlaborcz railway accident

The Mezőlaborcz railway accident on September 26, 1915 was a rear-end collision on the open road . 36 people died. The scene of the accident was then in Hungary , now in Slovakia .

Starting position

Two trains were on the route of the Hungarian-Galician Railway . The route had a gradient of 25 ‰ in the direction of travel. The hospital train No. 920a with two pull and two pushing locomotives went ahead , followed by the freight train No. 924a with one pulling and pushing locomotive each. The freight train carried petroleum in 30 tank cars . In Begleitwagen an excursion society - the freight train remained - irregular.

the accident

The freight train was traveling much too fast on the slope at 80 km / h - the brakes probably failed - and it also ran over two signals showing "stop" . The collision took place between the train stations Vidrány (today: Vydraň) and Mezőlaborcz (today: Medzilaborce ). It was so violent that the approaching train was compressed to a third of its original length. All of its vehicles derailed . The tank cars were damaged, kerosene ran out, flowed downhill down the hill, ignited an explosion and burned. The sliding locomotives of the train in front both derailed.

consequences

36 people died, including the entire staff of the approaching freight train - with the exception of 2 people who had previously jumped off.
