Sa Pereira railway accident

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sa Pereira railway accident was the collision of the Estrella del Norte long-distance train with a lorry on a level crossing in Sa Pereira , Santa Fe Province , Argentina , on February 25, 1978. 55 people died. This was the second worst rail accident in Argentina's history.

Starting position

The Estrella del Norte was traveling from San Miguel de Tucumán to Retiro Miter station , one of the terminal stations in the north of Buenos Aires . At that time it was operated by the Nuevo Central Argentino . The train was completely overcrowded with 2130 passengers. It was pulled by an EMD type GT22 locomotive .

The Estrella del Norte left the train station in San Miguel de Tucumán late at around 7.25 p.m. on February 24, and the delay increased as the arrival of other trains had to be awaited en route. In order to reduce the delay, the train was traveling at a speed of 90 km / h, which is relatively high for the local conditions. When the train had approached the level crossing within about two kilometers, the engine driver operated the horn.

The truck involved in the railway accident , a Ford F-600 only about two years old with a trailer, had a dead weight of 12 tons and loaded 25 tons of canned food . He was traveling from the Entre Ríos province to Cordoba on National Road 19 . On this route he had to cross a level crossing in the small town of Sa Pereia. Shortly before the level crossing, the truck driver concentrated on overtaking a long-distance bus, which also took away his view of the approaching train and paid no attention to the other traffic.

The level crossing in Sa Pereia was secured with a stop light system and acoustically. The system was functional and working correctly when the train approached the level crossing.

The summer weather was clear.

the accident

When the truck driver noticed the train, he accelerated to get across the tracks before the train. However, the heavily loaded truck accelerated relatively slowly. The leading vehicle of the lorry managed to cross the tracks, the locomotive hit the trailer at 7:22 a.m., derailed , overturned and lay on its side. The train of wagons drove or slid several hundred meters further, wagons derailed and in the middle of the train two wagons pushed into one another.

consequences

55 people died and 56 were also injured.

Remarks

  1. Originally the Estrella del Norte ran between La Paz in Bolivia and Buenos Aires, but in 1978 - like the accident train - at least partially only from San Miguel de Tucumán.
