Sarılar railway accident

In the railway accident in Sarılar on July 8, 2018, around 5 p.m., a train derailed on the İstanbul Sirkeci – Swilengrad railway near Sarılar in the European part of Turkey. 24 people died.

Starting position

The express train of TCDD was 362 travelers and six employees of the railway from Kapikule or Uzunköprü (both in the province of Edirne ) to Halkalı in Istanbul go. The later scene of the accident was passed by trains on the morning of the day of the accident without any problems. Then, however, heavy rain set in.

the accident

The track was then washed away near the village of Sarılar in Çorlu County, Tekirdağ Province . As a result, five or six passenger cars on the train derailed. Only the locomotive and the first car that followed it remained largely undamaged.

consequences

At least 24 people died in the accident and another 318 were injured. More than 100 ambulances were used for the rescue work, the army provided helicopters and local residents with tractors for the rescue work. The injured were taken to the surrounding hospitals. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.
