Uzunköprü ( Turkish for long bridge ), ( Bulgarian Узункьопрю , Usunkoprju) is a district town and a district of the Turkish province of Edirne . The city is located about 47 kilometers south of Edirne not far from the Greek-Turkish state border in Eastern Thrace . Uzunköprü is home to around two thirds (2018: 64.30%) of the district's population.

The district is the largest in the province in terms of area and has the third largest population. Its population density is below the provincial average (67 inhabitants per km²). It borders in the north on the central district ( Merkez ) Edirne and the district Havsa , in the south on the districts İpsala and Keşan . In the east it has the provinces of Kırklareli and Tekirdağ as neighbors and in the west the district of Meriç . In the northwest, the Meriç River forms the border with Greece .
In addition to the district town, the district consists of another municipality ( Belediye ): Kırcasalih (2,821 inhabitants) and 53 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 361 inhabitants. Kurtbey is the largest village with 1,286 inhabitants.

Uzunköprü train station is on the Istanbul Sirkeci – Swilengrad railway line . Since the border was drawn by the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923, the Greek / Turkish border ran along the river Ewros , on whose eastern bank Uzunköprü lies. The railway line that crosses the river to Pythio here became Greek on the other side of the Ewros, and Uzunköprü became a border station . Currently (2019) the border crossing is no longer used for economic reasons.
The city is touched in the east by the E 87 (D-550).
history
According to statistics from Ljubomir Miletitsch , there were still 183 Bulgarian families living in Uzunköprü in 1912 , around 1011 people. 12 volunteers fought in the Macedonia-Adrianople Volunteer Corps of the Bulgarian Army in the First Balkan War against the Ottoman Empire . After the Second Balkan War in 1913, the last Bulgarians were expelled from Uzunköprü. The majority settled in Bulgaria in the Burgas region.
Sports
The most famous and at the same time most successful sports club in the district and the district capital is the Uzunköprüspor club . The football division of the club played a total of eleven seasons in the third highest professional division, in today's TFF 2. Lig in the 1980s and 1990s . In the third division season 1987/88 the club reached the championship and rose for the first time in its club history in the second highest Turkish league, in today's TFF 1st Lig on. After just one season, relegation failed in this league. After Uzunköprüspor had been active in the 3rd league for seven years, they said goodbye to professional football in the summer of 1996 when they were relegated from the 3rd league and have since played in the lower Turkish amateur leagues. In addition to the football division, the club's basketball division also had some successes in the regional league.
