Fagonia cretica is a species of the genus Fagonia . It is native to the Mediterranean and the only representative of the genus that can also be found in Europe.

Fagonia cretica is a perennial subshrub that reaches heights of 10 to 40 centimeters. The plant is almost bare and prostrate. The stem is angular. The leaflets are 5 to 15 millimeters in size, lanceolate, thorn-tipped and more or less leathery. The flowers stand individually in the armpits. The crown is purple and sloping. The capsule is 5 millimeters in size and has a sharp pentagonal shape. The stylus are 2 to 4 millimeters in size.

The flowering period extends from February to June.

Fagonia cretica is diploid with a chromosome number of 2n = 18.

Occurrence

Fagonia cretica has its distribution center in the southern Mediterranean area and occurs in all North African countries from Morocco to Egypt . It reaches Asia on the island of Cyprus , it occurs on the Arabian Peninsula and Socotra and reaches Europe in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula , on Mallorca , in Calabria , Sicily and Malta as well as on Crete and Anafi . Of the Atlantic islands, Fagonia cretica populates Madeira , the Ilhas Selvagens and all seven Canary Islands and reaches its southern border on the Cape Verde islands of Santo Antão , São Vicente , Sal and Boavista .

This species grows on disturbed areas as well as in semi-natural, open vegetation on sand and gravel, sometimes also on gypsum, chalk or on salt soils. Their altitude ranges in Spain and North Africa from sea level to about 1100 m.

Systematics and history of discovery

Fagonia cretica was first published by Carl von Linné in 1753 . It represents the type of the genus Fagonia . Although it is very rare in Crete, it was found there by Giuseppe Casabona around 1592 and portrayed by the illustrator Georg Dyckmann .
