Lalapaşa is a county seat and a district in the Turkish province of Edirne in Eastern Thrace . The city is home to a quarter (2018: 24.34%) of the district's population. It is located about 32 kilometers by road northeast of the provincial capital Edirne.
The district, formed in 1945, is located in the north of the province and borders the province of Kırklareli in the east and Bulgaria in the north . This is where the Lessowo-Hamzabeyli border crossing is located . Internal borders exist in the southwest with the central district ( Merkez ) of Edirne and in the southeast with the district of Süloğlu . In addition to the district town, the district consists of 27 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 187 inhabitants. This is the lowest average in the province. Çömlekakpınar is the largest village with 480 inhabitants.
The name Lalapaşa is derived from the Ottoman general Lala Şahin Paşa. He conquered the area for the Ottoman Empire in 1361 and received Lalapaşa as a fiefdom .
The Lalapaşa dolmen is by the village. The Kırıkköy menhirs form several stone circles about two kilometers south of Çömlekakpınar in the municipality of Lalapaşa on the hill from which it is named.
