İpsala ( Greek Κύψελα , Kypsela) is a Turkish district town in Eastern Thrace in the province of Edirne on the Turkish- Greek border . İpsala is also the name of the district ( İlçe ). The city is about 78 kilometers (105 kilometers by road) south of Edirne. In terms of traffic, it is connected by the E 84 (Keşan-Silivri).

district

The district is located in the southern part of the province and borders in the northwest on Meriç County , in the north on Uzunköprü County , in the east on Keşan County and in the south on Enez County . The river Meriç (Greek Evros , ancient Hebros ) forms the border to neighboring Greece. The river delta landscape near İpsala is mainly characterized by rice fields . Because of its rich bird population, it is popular as a hunting area.

The İpsala border crossing is the largest crossing into Greece. A large part of the exchange of goods between Europe and Turkey takes place there. Modernization of the border crossing began in the 1990s. The border can only be crossed by vehicle and not on foot.

The district was established in Ottoman times. In addition to the district town (with around a third of the district population; 2018: 31.25%), it consists of two other municipalities ( Belediye ): Esetçe (2,183) and Yenikarpuzlu (3,096 inh.). There are also 19 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 717 inhabitants. This is the highest average of all counties in the province. Seven villages (Köy) have more than a thousand inhabitants:

  • Aliçopehlivan (1,882)
  • Sultan (1,265)
  • İbriktepe (1,233)
  • Haci (1,148)
  • Koyuntepe (1,066)
  • Paşakoy (1,026)
  • Kocahıdır (1,018)

The village of Ahır (2017: 317 inh.), Which still existed at the end of 2017, has been a mahall of the district town under the name Fatih since 2018 (2018: 308 inh.).

history

İpsala has a 4000 year old Thracian and Byzantine history. It was conquered by the Persian king Dareios I. In 1356 the Ottoman rule began under Murat I.
