Havsa is a district town and a district in the north of the Turkish province of Edirne .

The town

The city is home to almost half (2018: 45.81%) of the district's population and is about 32 kilometers by road (27 km as the crow flies) southeast of the provincial capital.

Earlier names were Hasköy and Havas-i Mahmud Paşa ("private property of Mahmut Pasha"). Evliya Çelebi named the place Hafsa and explained that this was the name of a well-known woman named Hafsa Hatun who lived there.

The county

The district, consisting mostly of plains, was formed in 1954. It borders in the south on the district Uzunköprü , in the west on the central district (Merkez) of the capital Edirne , and in the north on the district Süloğlu . In the east it borders on three districts of the Kırklareli Province . The district has a population density of 34.8 - that's slightly more than half the provincial average (67 inhabitants per square kilometer).

In addition to the district town (since 1940 a municipality, Belediye ), it consists of 22 villages ( Köy ) with an average population of 467 inhabitants. Two of the villages have over a thousand inhabitants: Abalar (1,071) and Osmanlı (1,015).
