ERC Westfalen Kunstlauf

The Eissportzentrum Westfalen is an ice rink on Strobelallee in Dortmund . The ice sports center is used by the ice hockey club Eisadler Dortmund and the figure skating club ERC Westfalen Kunstlauf . The stadium has space for 5,000 spectators, 3,998 of which are standing and 1,002 seats.

history

The stadium was built in 1952 and completely renovated in 1992 as part of an expansion. The audience capacity was then increased to around 5,000. A total of 3,600 m² of ice surface is available on two lanes. Since then, however, only minor measures have been taken that only removed the most serious deficiencies.

The ice hockey club EHC Dortmund is one of the anchor tenants and plays its home games here. In recent years, due to its sporting and financial boom, the club has taken over the restaurant in the stadium, renovated it and renamed it "Elchschänke". Furthermore, the walls were painted in the colors of the current sponsor. For the 2008/09 season , Westfalenhallen Dortmund GmbH restored the ceiling construction and replaced the grid with a glass band.

In 2011, Westfalenhallen Dortmund GmbH sold the stadium to the city of Dortmund. Since then it no longer bears the previous name "Eissportzentrum Westfalenhallen Dortmund", but "Eissportzentrum Westfalen".

In addition, the Westphalia Ice Sports Center is a federal base and state performance center for figure skating and ice dancing, as well as a training facility for national and international competitive sports . At world and European championships, the stadium is used by the participants as a training facility.

Features of the stadium

The ice sports center, in the immediate vicinity of the Westfalenhallen complex, is one of the most modern federal support points / state performance centers in Germany, primarily due to its glass-steel construction and extensive equipment. The construction is essentially based on the Westfalenhalle 1. The facility houses two ice surfaces that are connected to one another at the same level. The ice rinks are in operation for almost 11 months a year.

Condition of the stadium

During the 2009/10 season the head trainer and sports manager of EHC Dortmund, Frank Gentges , criticized the condition of the ice rink several times. In a newspaper interview with the local print medium Ruhr Nachrichten , for example, he addressed the poor condition of the crew cabins.

“Back then, in Dortmund, I agreed on the condition that I would have the same sporting conditions as the other teams in the league. But we are sitting with 25 people in a cabin that is only intended for 18 "
