Frank Gentges (born February 25, 1965 in Kempen ) is a former German ice hockey player and coach. During his career he was active in the 1. Bundesliga for the Düsseldorfer EG , the ECD Sauerland and the Eisbären Berlin .

Career

As a player

Gentges began his career at Krefelder EV , for which he was under contract for three seasons, with the exception of a brief interlude with the Rhenish rival, Düsseldorfer EG. The defensive player played his first 15 games for DEG in what was then the highest German ice hockey league, the 1st Bundesliga. In the summer of 1985 he moved to EC Bad Nauheim , before he left the club after only one year and joined the ECD Sauerland, which was then active in the 1st Bundesliga. In Iserlohn he was one of the regular players and scored eight assists in 32 league games . About the ESC Wolfsburg in the coming season, Gentges signed a contract with the then first division club ESV Kaufbeuren at the beginning of the 1988/89 season . There he was only used 25 times and returned to the 2nd Bundesliga in Wolfsburg during the current season .

The 194 cm tall defender left the EHC at the end of the 1989/90 game year and then went on the ice for EV Stuttgart , Krefeld EV and EHC Essen-West . After his contract in Essen expired in 1992 and the German had previously shown good performances, he was used in 75 games and scored 73 points, those responsible at EHC Dynamo Berlin became aware of the then 27-year-old and transferred him to the capital . Gentges played 43 games for the Berlin team and was able to score 13 times. After his engagement at the EHC, from 1994 to 1997 he tied his ice skates for the 1st EV Weiden , the Deggendorfer EC and the EV Ravensburg .

At the beginning of the 1997/98 season he moved to Grefrather EC , which was active in the then second highest German league, the 1st division. Gentges was under contract with Grefrather EC for seven years and was one of the top performers within the team. He also remained loyal to the club when financial difficulties arose during the 1999/00 season , the club stopped playing and from then on the previous second team in the regional league functioned as the first senior team. The defensive player, weighing 104 kg, was now active with the Grefrathers in the regional league. His best points season was the Regionalliga season 2002/03, when he was able to achieve 91 points in 40 league games. After the main round was over in the 2003/04 season , Gentges joined the then league rivals Herner EG for a few months , for whom he played six games in the regional league play-offs. He then ended his active ice hockey career at the age of 39.

As a trainer

Gentges first worked as a coach at Grefrather EC, for which he had previously worked as a player. With the ice hockey club he was able to win the regional league championship three times in a row. For the 2004/05 season the Blue Lions Leipzig took him from the league under contract, with whom he reached the play-off semi-finals as head coach. There he failed with the Blue Lions in the semifinals after losing 3-1 to EHC Munich . After the club had to file for bankruptcy at the end of the season , he left the club and joined the Krefelder EV, where he then worked as a coach of the junior team in the German junior league .

At KEV he then stood behind the gang for three years before accepting a contract offer from Nijmegen Devils from the Dutch Eredivisie in summer 2008 . Gentges signed a three-year contract, which was terminated after only one season. Despite good results in the sporting as well as in the economic area, he left the former Dutch champion and moved back to Germany to the EHC Dortmund . The former defender received a contract with the league club until 2011. His contract was extended in January 2011 by two years. At EHC Dortmund, in addition to his work as head coach, he also worked as a sports manager. On April 5, 2012 he was introduced as the head coach of the Löwen Frankfurt . On February 20, 2013 Frank Gentges resigned from his coaching post after quarrels had occurred in the team environment in the days before. Since the 2013/2014 season, Frank Gentges has been the head coach and sports manager of the upper division Königsborn Bulldogs, with whom he signed a three-year contract. Since the season 14/15 he is coach of the upper division ESC Moskitos Essen.
