The Eixo Monumental (German monumental axis) is the central east-west axis of the capital of Brazil , Brasília , and is 8 km long and a maximum of 250 meters wide.

history

The Eixo Monumental was part of the overall urban planning concept when planning the Brazilian capital Brasilia. The capital was built with large-scale thinking, and large streets were designed accordingly. An essential element of the Plano piloto (master plan) of the urban planner Lúcio Costa was the creation of central axes that should divide the city into four quarters. When looking at the cityscape from above or on a city map , Brasilia has the symbolic shape of a cross or an airplane. The Eixo Monumental forms the fuselage of the aircraft as an east-west axis, the most important north-south axis (as the wing of the aircraft) is the Eixo Rodoviário .

The Eixo Monumental, opened to traffic on April 21, 1960, has 12 lanes and, with a width of 250 meters, is the widest street in the world. It replaced the Avenida Presidente Vargas ( Rio de Janeiro ), which was 80 meters wide when it was opened on September 7, 1944 , making it the widest street in Brazil.

Location and importance

Brasilia - Eixo Monumental (March 2014)

While the Eixo Rodoviário mainly runs through residential areas, the Eixo Monumental, which is formed by the Via Norte Um and Via Sul Um separated by a wide green belt, touches numerous representative buildings.

The eastern end point of the Eixo Monumental is the place of the three powers ; About 8 kilometers to the west it ends at Brasilia train station. She passes the following buildings or building complexes:

Addresses and Sectors

The Eixo Monumental is the starting point for the formation of the addresses in the entire city, as it divides them into Asa Norte (northern wing) and Asa Sul (southern wing). The addresses in Brasília allow the location of the addressed building to be calculated relative to its location on the Eixo Monumental (SQS 708 H 44 - building 44 in Block H is 4 superblocks west of the Eixo Rodoviário and 8 superblocks south of the Eixo Monumental).

Likewise, all areas designated as sectors with a special purpose are divided by them into a northern and a southern area, such as the SBN (Setor Bancário Norte) between Eixo Rodoviário and Via Leste 1 Norte and SBS (Setor Bancário Sul) between Eixo Rodoviário and Via Read 1 Sul.
