The Brasília TV Tower is a 224 meter high TV tower for the transmission of VHF and TV frequencies in Brasília . The steel lattice tower has a free viewing platform for up to 150 people at a height of 75 meters. The building is still the tallest in the Brazilian capital. The landmark is visited by around 300,000 people annually.

history

The television tower was designed by Lúcio Costa and built between 1965 and 1967. It was officially inaugurated on March 9, 1967. Costa, who played a key role in the development of Brasília, provided the tower with precise details in his 1956 competition plans. In his explanatory text on the draft, Costa described:

“[…] And the radio transmission tower, which is planned as a triangular structure and stands on a monumental base made of exposed concrete. A metal superstructure rises above the floors with the studios of the transmitters with a viewing platform halfway up. "

The originally 218 meter high tower was raised by 6 meters in 1987.

Between 2010 and 2012, a new television tower was built in the north of the city to broadcast digital television .

The television tower has been closed since August 2013 for renovation work that will take several months. In addition to the steel framework structure, the elevators are also to be renewed. The work is expected to be completed in April 2014 and cost around 12 million reais .

description

Location and surroundings

The television tower is located in downtown Brasília on a central, artificially raised hill between the two main axes, Via Norte Um Oeste and Via Sul Um Oeste, on a motorway-like clover-leaf cross. A weekly market has been held in the large parking lots and open spaces around the tower since 1970.

architecture

View into the interior of the framework

The triangular platform made of exposed concrete on the tower base represents the division of the three state powers . It rises only a few meters above the ground and is supported by massive pillars. There are operating rooms on the fully glazed floor.

The basic triangular shape is also continued in the rest of the building. Together with the Square of the Three Powers, the tower forms the so-called monumental axis of the planned city of Brasília. The simple, linearly tapering steel lattice tower can be understood as a modern interpretation of the Eiffel Tower .

At 75 meters there is an open-air viewing platform that is accessible free of charge and is accessible daily via elevators.

reception

The Brasília TV tower was honored on April 21, 1960 in a special stamp ( Michel catalog no. 981, perforation 11½ × 10) as part of an architectural series by the Brazilian Post. The light red stamp has a postage of 6.50 Cruzeiro and shows the tower in a sketch from the side.
