Ekkehard (Münsterschwarzach)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ekkehard († September 29 and December 11, 1465 ) was abbot of the Benedictine monastery in Münsterschwarzach from 1454 or 1455 to 1465 .

Life

Little is known about the origins and family of Abbot Ekkehard. Early research identified him as a member of the von Rotenhan family of ministers . Leineweber, however, mentions the early "bourgeoisie" of the monastery in Neuenberg , from which Ekkehard came to Münsterschwarzach. As early as 1435, there were no more nobles in the convent. For Leineweber, Ekkehard was therefore of bourgeois origin.

He came to the Main with the other Fulda monks around 1444 and quickly rose to the position of prior of the monastery. Ekkehard first appeared as abbot on January 31, 1455. While some sources date the abbot's resignation to the year 1466, Wagner assumes the abbot's death in 1465. Ekkehard died on September 29th or December 11th and was buried in the monastery church at the altar of the Virgin Mary.

Individual evidence

  1. Heinrich Wagner (p. 148) gives these dates, while all other sources and representations give the year 1466 as the year of death; Kassius Hallinger (p. 91) also assumes a day before March 19, when Ekkehard is resigned.
  2. Cf. Leo Trunk: The Abbots of Münsterschwarzach . P. 156 f. In most of the representations, the year 1450 predominates, only Heinrich Wagner mentions 1453. A document from 1454, according to Wagner, names Ekkehard as the prior of the monastery.
