El Capitan is a mountain in Guadalupe Mountains National Park in western Texas , United States . With a height of 2,458 meters, it is the eighth highest peak in Texas.

The mountain is located north of Culberson County , a few miles east of Dell City . El Capitan is not far from Guadalupe Peak, 200 m higher, on the southern edge of the Guadalupe Mountains . It rises abruptly from the Chihuahua Desert and is surrounded on three sides by steep rock walls, which is why it can be seen well from a great distance.
Others
The mountain was used as a landmark for travelers for centuries due to its distinctive shape and steep rock faces . Today El Capitan can be reached via hiking trails. The ascent leads from the visitor center of the national park to the higher Guadalupe Peak and from there on the ridge down to El Capitan.
