history

El Cerro is located outside the city walls of the original old town . In 1803, Mr. José María Rodríguez and Mr. Francisco Betancourt began to build their houses there. Many other Habaneros quickly followed their example. In 1807 the first wooden church was built.

For about twenty years (1820–1840), El Cerro was the chosen place for Havana families to spend their summer vacations. The health house Casa de Salud del Centro Asturiano llamada La Covadonga was a local recreation center. Many nobles built their fincas here . In 1843 there were five large relaxation fincas and hundreds of family accommodations, some of which were known for their luxurious furnishings.

El Cerro's motto is "El Cerro tiene la llave" ("El Cerro has the key"). This goes back to the fact that numerous aqueducts ran through the area of today's urban district in order to supply the then urban area with fresh water from nearby rivers. Some of them, like the Zanja real , are still around today.

In the course of the territorial reform in 1976, Cerro received the status of one of a total of 15 Municipios of the city of Havana.
