Guanabacoa is one of 15 Municipios (boroughs) of the city of Havana and is located in the eastern part of the city. The municipality is one of the oldest in Havana and was first mentioned in the 16th century. Guanabacoa is known for the traditions of the Santería , where the Babalaó Enriquito lived and worked in the Barrio La Hata , as well as for the Battle of Guanabacoa, which took place as part of the Seven Years' War with Great Britain in the 18th century.

history

The origins of Guanabacoa can be traced back to a law of the Spanish king from 1512, and in 1743 the place received city ​​rights . In 1762, the English were successfully fought by the townspeople with machetes . Guanabacoa was also home to a small group of indigenous peoples who were exiled from Florida in the 18th century. In 1895 Guanabacoa was involved in the Cuban War of Independence , and numerous Mambí fighters were active in the city. The first communist group was founded in the city in 1923.

During the Cuban Revolution in 1959, the people of Guanabacoa fielded numerous fighters in street fighting in Havana.

economy

The economy of Guanabacoa is mainly dominated by industry. The Cuban steel industry in particular experienced its rise here, and metallurgy is still an economic focus of the municipality today . In Guanabacoa, building materials, chemical products, as well as tobacco and food products are also manufactured. Urban agriculture has also been practiced in the city since the 1990s .

Infrastructure

After Guanabacoa there are regular buses to the center of Havana. Bus traffic has expanded massively in recent years, the number of passengers carried rose from almost 63,000 in 2006 to over 195,000 in 2011. The P-15 bus route connects the municipality with the city center.

The city has a cinema, two video halls, a theater, two cultural centers, three museums and two libraries, among other things. There are also 17 day-care centers, 38 primary schools, eleven secondary schools and a number of specialized educational institutions in the city.

There are 264 family doctors in Guanabacoa (2011). There are three polyclinics in the city, as well as some specialty clinics and pharmacies. The city is home to a Catholic church that was built between 1721 and 1748 and is called the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción .

In 1964, a city museum opened that deals in particular with the history of the 18th and 19th centuries and provides information about Afro-Cuban culture in the municipality.
