El Faro de Cabo Mayor or Faro Bellavista, is a lighthouse on the Spanish Atlantic coast and is located on Cabo Mayor in Santander , the capital of Cantabria .
history
On February 17, 1833, the construction of a rotating lantern on Cabo Mayor was ordered by royal orders. Before that, there was a watchtower at the same place , from which signals were sent to the ships with flags during the day and with fire at night. The current lighthouse was inaugurated six years later, on August 15, 1839.
The design of the building was originally the work of Captain Felipe Bauzá, although the final version was done by Domingo Rojí. The structure consists of a stone round tower built on a second body with a square floor plan. The tower stands 91 meters above sea level and rises 30 meters above the ground.
The installation of technical equipment significantly reduced the space available at the base of the tower, so that an adjacent building was built in 1935 as a home for the lighthouse keepers. This was inhabited until 2001. It was then rebuilt and now serves as an art center and museum , the Centro de Arte Faro de Cabo Mayor .
Centro de Arte Faro de Cabo Mayor
The cultural center has three exhibition rooms with a collection of works of art, objects and curiosities related to the sea and lighthouses, put together by the Cantabrian artists Eduardo Sanz and Isabel Villar. The collection includes works by international artists such as Eduardo Arroyo , Joaquin Peinado, Christian Awe , Javier Mariscal , José Caballero , Guillermo Pérez-Villalta, Fernando Bellver and many more.
In its early days, the lighthouse had second-order optics and a Fresnel lens system that gave off a fixed light with a flash every minute. It had 100 upper and 60 lower mirrors with 8 lenses. This device was moved by a weight system and produced a cone of light 3 inches in base and 2 inches in height. It was built in Paris.
The use of mineral oil as fuel began in 1877, making it the first lighthouse of its kind in Spain.
In 1954 a siren was installed and 4 years later a radio beacon with a range of 80 km, which was modernized in 1979. It is operated electrically and draws its electricity from the city network.
