action

The wealthy Jane Baker (in the German version Baxter ) lives in New Orleans with her husband and two children. She starts an affair with Fred Kellerman, with whom she secretly meets in a specially rented apartment while she leaves her children alone. Her daughter Lucy finds out and drowns her little brother in the bathtub so that she can call her mother for help. As Jane and Fred rush home to her, an accident occurs in which Fred dies.

A year later, the now divorced Jane moves alone into the house where she met Fred. The owner, the blind Robert Duval, lives in the lower apartment. He repeatedly hears sex noises from the apartment upstairs, also in connection with Jane saying the name "Fred". He finds out that Fred was beheaded in the accident and that Jane was then admitted to a mental institution. Robert spies on her and discovers that she is keeping her deceased lover's head in a freezer and appears to be masturbating with it.

When Jane's daughter Lucy also discovers the head, one day she cooks dinner for Jane and Robert. Her mother finds part of Fred's ear in her plate. Horrified, she runs into the bathroom. Lucy follows her and confronts her mother that she knows about the head and this time Jane is locked away forever. Lucy also admits that she killed her brother back then. Angry, Jane drowns her daughter in the bathtub and then goes to bed with Fred's head. Robert breaks into her apartment, is discovered by her and there is a physical altercation in which Jane is accidentally killed. When Robert pans the bed in search of Lucy, he is bitten in the neck by Fred's head and killed.

production

Macabro was offered to the then assistant director Lamberto Bava by the brothers Pupi and Antonio Avati as the first directorial work. For the role of Jane Baker, the then 30-year-old British Bernice Stegers was engaged; Stanko Molnar played the blind Robert Duval ; and in the role of Lucy, Veronica Zinny stood in front of the camera in her first and only film.

The low-budget film is a production by Amatis AMA Film and Medusa Distribuzione and was shot in four weeks. The shooting took place mainly in northern Italy (including Gardone Riviera ), but also in New Orleans , the location of the film.

reception

According to film historian Roberto Curti, the film was well received by the press and turned out to be a financial success.
