El Panecillo (German for the bread roll ) is the name of a hill in the middle of Quito , the capital of Ecuador . Quito is already over 2,800 meters above sea level . El Panecillo rises another 200 meters and reaches a total height of 3,035 meters above sea level. The Spaniards named the hill el Panecillo at the beginning of the 16th century. In the pre-Inca period it was called Yavirac , which indicates water resources . It was called Shungoloma or Heart Hill by the Incas .

In 1976, the Order of the Oblates commissioned the Spanish artist Agustín de la Herrán Matorras to build a 45 m high aluminum monument of a Madonna , which was assembled on a high base on the summit of the Panecillo. It is made from 7000 pieces of aluminum. The monument was inaugurated on March 28, 1976 by the Archbishop of Quito, Pablo Muñoz Vega . The stature was designed and built by Anibal Lopes from Quito. The Virgin stands on top of a ball and steps on a snake, which is a classic Madonna portrait. According to the bronze plaque on the monument, the woman represented by the statue is the woman of the Apocalypse , as described in the Book of Revelation (Revelation 12: 1-18).
