El Xihuingo, the "place of the year" , extends over an area of about one by two kilometers at an altitude of 3240 meters above sea level. The site is dominated by the pyramid " El Tecolote " (named after an animal sculpture found here) and the hill "El Peñuela" . The west-facing pyramid is the end point of an axis around which the place, such as Teotihuacán , was built. The heyday of Xihuingo can be dated to the period 300–750 AD, which is also considered to be the classical period of the Teotihuacan culture .

In the village itself and in the mountains around the city there are rock carvings depicting human hands, astronomical sketches and armed warriors who are attributed to the Teotihuacan culture.

In classical times, Xihuingo was a place on the trade route that connected the cities of Tepeapulco , Otumba , Calpulalpan and Tlaxcala with the coastal region on the Gulf of Mexico and on which obsidian was transported from the Sierra de las Navajas plateau .
