Elaine Pagels (born Hiesey, born February 13, 1943 in Palo Alto , California) is an American theologian.

Pagels is Harrington Spear Paine Professor of Religion at Princeton University and is best known for several books on the apocryphal writings of the New Testament. She studied at Stanford University (BA 1964, MA 1965) and received her doctorate from Harvard University . There she was part of the team that examined the Nag Hammadi writings .

Elaine Pagels is the daughter of the botanist William Hiesey (1903–1998) and was married to the astrophysicist Heinz Pagels (1939–1988). In 1981 she was a MacArthur Fellow . In 1992 she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . For 2015 she received the National Humanities Medal .
